1.所有・所属を表す of

1 〜の誰か

He is a friend of mine.
(彼は私の友達の1人です。)

A son of the doctor is going to succeed his father.
その医者の息子さんは父親の跡を継ぐでしょう。)

I saw a acquaintance of hers.
(私は彼女の知り合いを見かけました。)

a friend of mine と my friend の違い

a friend of mine と my friend は両方が「私の友人」の意味ですが、微妙にニュアンスが異なります。
a friend of mine が「友人の1人」を表すのに対し、my friend は「親友」であることを暗に意味します。

Takuma is a friend of mine.
(タクマは私の友達の1人です。)

Takuma is my friend.
(タクマは私の(仲の良い)友人です。)

したがって、「最高の友達」と言いたい場合には my best friend と表現します。
a best friend of mine とするのは不自然な気がします。

× Takuma is a best friend of mine.
○ Takuma is my best friend.
(タクマは私の最高の友人です。)

2 〜の代表

Fumio Kishida is the Prime Minister of Japan.
(岸田文雄は日本の総理大臣です。)

Ronald Wilson Reagan was the 40th President of the United States.
(ロナルド・ウィルソン・レーガンは第40代アメリカ合衆国大統領です。)

He is the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party.
(彼は自由民主党の党首です。)

The president of the society is Mr. Yamada.
その協会の代表は田中さんです。)

I haven’t met the chairman of the board.
(私は取締役会長に会ったことがない。)

3 〜の製品

The Windows is the product of Microsoft Corporation.
(ウィンドウズはマイクロソフトの製品です。)

The VAIO is the product of Sony.
(バイオはソニーの製品です。)

2.数量を表す of(1)

1 全部と半分

all of 〜(〜の全部)

All of my friends have their own car.
私の友達全員が自分の車を持っています。)

He has spent all of the money.
(彼はすべての金を使った。)

※all 〜 と all of 〜の違い

of が必要・不必要なのかは、2つのルールを暗記すると対応できるようになります。
以下の2つのルール以外の場合、of はあっても無くても構いません。

1 代名詞が続く場合は「必要」
→all of them, all of it, all of us 等

2 冠詞や代名詞の所有格のつかない複数名詞には「不必要」
→all books, all cloths, all cars 等

half of 〜(〜の半分)

Half of us did’t know about it.
私達の半分がそのことを知らなかった。)

I ate half of the cake.
そのケーキの半分を食べました。)

※half 〜 と half of 〜の違い

of が必要・不必要なのかは、2つのルールを暗記すると対応できるようになります。
以下の2つのルール以外の場合、of はあっても無くても構いません。

1 代名詞が続く場合は「必要」
→half of them, half of it, half of us 等

2 数量や単位を表す場合は「不必要」
→half a mile, half an hour, half a dozen 等

2 多数と大部分

many of the 〜(多数の〜)

この表現は可算名詞に使います。the の代わりに、名詞・代名詞の所有格や these、those などが来る場合もあります。
可算名詞については >> 形容詞 でご確認下さい。

Many of the students go to cram schools.
多くの生徒達が塾に通っている。)

I still keep many of his books I have borrowed on a bookshelf.
今までに借りた彼のたくさんの本をまだ本棚に置いている。)

most of the 〜(〜の大部分)

この表現は可算名詞と不可算名詞の両方で使います
the の代わりに、名詞・代名詞の所有格や these、those などが来る場合もあります。

Most of the cars are exported.
その車の大部分が輸出される。)

I can’t understand most of those letters because they are written in Korean.

3 いくらか、多少

some of the 〜(いくらかの〜、多少の〜)

この表現は可算名詞と不可算名詞の両方で使います
the の代わりに、名詞・代名詞の所有格や these、those などが来る場合もあります。

I have some of these pc tools.
これらのパソコン用ツールのいくらかを持っています。)

You may drink some of the wine.
多少のワインなら飲んでもいいよ。)

4 〜の中の…

数詞+of 〜(〜の中の…)

数字を変えることで、様々な場面で使うことができます。

Two of us must stay here.
僕らのうちの2人がここに残らなければならない。)

Three fifths of students went home.
生徒の5分の3が家に帰った。)

Twenty percent of the price is our profit.
値段の20%が我々の利益です。)

5 〜の1つ

one of the 〜(〜の1つ)

名詞を複数形にすることを忘れないようにして下さい。

I’m one of the baseball club members at the school.
(僕は学校の野球クラブメンバーの一員です。)

He is one of the candidates for the election.
(彼はその選挙の候補者の1人です。)

6 誰も〜ない、何も〜ない

none of 〜(誰も〜ない、何も〜ない)

None of them failed the exam.
誰もテストに落ちなかった。)

None of the vegetabeles spoiled.
どの野菜も傷んでいなかった。)

3.数量を表す of(2)

「数量・単位+of+名詞」で表される表現です。数の数え方として試験での出題率が高く、また、実生活での使用頻度も高いです。
たくさんありすぎて、たまに日本語でも勘違いしてしまうことがありますが、しっかりと覚えて下さい。

1 〜杯

(a) cup(s) of〜(カップ)

a cup of tea(紅茶1杯)
two cups of coffee(コーヒー2杯)

(a) glass(es) of〜(コップ)

a glass of milk(牛乳1杯)
two glasses of cola(コーラ2杯)

(a) spoonful(s) of〜(スプーン)

a spoonful of sugar(砂糖1杯)
two spoonfuls of salt(塩2杯)

2 〜枚

(a) sheet(s) of〜, (a) piece(s) of〜

主に紙で使う表現ですが、sheet と piece のどちらを使っても構いません。
a sheet of paper(紙1枚)
two pieces of paper(紙2枚)

3 〜切れ

(a) rasher(s) of〜(ベーコン・ハム)

a rasher of bacon(ベーコン1切れ)
two rashers of ham(ハム2切れ)

(a) cut(s) of〜(主に牛肉)

a cut of beef(牛肉1切れ)
two cuts of beef(牛肉2切れ)

(a) slice(s) of〜(パンなどの薄い1切れ)

a slice of bread(パン1切れ)
two slices of lemon(レモン2切れ)

4 〜組、〜箱

(a) pack(s) of〜

a pack of cards(トランプ1組)

5 〜足、〜着、〜個

4.場所を表す of

of の直後に地名が来るパターンです。

Welcome to the city of Kyoto.
京都市へようこそ。)

I’m going to the state of Utah.
ユタ州に行く予定です。)

He passed the entrance exam of the University of Tokyo.
(彼は東京大学の入試をパスした。)

5.一般的に使われる of

特徴や名前など、一般的によく使われる of の用法です。

I don’t like the color of this sweater.
このセーターの色が好きではない。)

I can’t remember the title of the song.
その歌の題名が思い出せない。)

My daughter wants this kind of shoes.
(娘がこの手の靴を欲しがっている。)

Write your name the back of it.
その裏に名前を書きなさいね。)

6.その他 of

1 原因・理由

because of〜(〜の理由で)

He was absent from school yesterday because of the flu.
(彼はインフルエンザで昨日学校を欠席した。)

I won’t catch the train because of the traffic jam.
渋滞のせいで電車に乗れないだろう。)

I could pass the exam because of Mr. Suzuki.
鈴木先生のおかげで試験に合格することができた。)

the cause of〜(〜の原因は…)

The cause of the accident was drunken driving.
事故の原因は飲酒運転だった。)

The cause of my asthma is allergy.
私の喘息の原因はアレルギーだった。)

2 材料

made of〜(〜でできている)

The table is made of wood.
(そのテーブルは木でできています。)

made of〜 と made from〜

made of〜は「材料が変化しない場合」に使われ、一方で made from〜は「材料が元の形から変化する場合」に使われます。
一概には言えませんが「材料が見た目でわかるかどうか」を判断基準にしてみてはいかがでしょうか。

もしくは、
「〜でできている」と訳せる場合は made of〜
「〜からできている」と訳せる場合は made from〜
と考えてみて下さい。

The table is made of wood.
(そのテーブルは木でできています。)

Paper is made from wood.
(紙は木からできています。)
