・関係副詞＝how
・前置詞＋関係代名詞＝in which
例文：
This is the way.
He went to Osaka in a car.
この２文を１つにしてみます。
まずは関係代名詞で
This is the way which he went to Osaka in.
前置詞 in を関係代名詞の直前に持っていく
This is the way in which he went to Osaka.
関係副詞＝前置詞＋関係代名詞なので
This is the way how he went to Osaka.
(このようにして彼は大阪に行きました。)
これで完成です。
先行詞が方法(the way)なので、関係副詞 how を使います。
ただこの場合は、先行詞の「the way」、もしくは関係副詞の「how」を省略することがほとんどです。
[the way を省略]
This is how he went to Osaka.
[how を省略]
This is the way he went to Osaka.
