１．句動詞とは？
とても便利でよく使う「動詞+前置詞」、「動詞+副詞」、「動詞+副詞+前置詞｣、｢動詞+名詞+前置詞｣の表現です。
２．句動詞の用法
1 動詞+前置詞
他動詞の働きをします。
例文：
He agrees with her.
（彼は彼女に賛成だ。）
Do you believe in fairies?
（あなたは妖精の存在を信じますか。）
I called on my aunt three days ago.
（私は３日前、叔母のところを訪れた。）
She insists on women rights.
（彼女は女性の権利を主張している。）
I always look after my grandmother.
（私はいつも祖母の世話をしています。）
その他、よく使われる表現です。
・account for〜(= explain)「〜を説明する」
・ask for〜「〜を求める」
・call for〜「〜を必要とする、求める」
・come across〜(= meet with)「〜に偶然出会う」
・consist of〜「〜から成る」
・depend on〜「〜に頼る、依存する」
・do without〜「〜なしで済ます」
・participate in〜「〜に参加する」
・suffer from〜「〜に苦しむ」
・stand by〜「〜を援助する、支持する」
・stand for〜「〜を象徴する、表す」
・take after〜(=resemble)「〜に似ている」など
2 動詞+副詞
これらは、自動詞になるものと、他動詞になるものの両方があります。
自動詞になるもの
例文：
The airplane my sister rode on took off.
（私の妹が乗った飛行機が離陸した。）
The car accident broke out at the crossing in winter.
（冬の交差点で自動車事故が起きた。）
その他、よく使われる表現です。
・come about「生じる」
・get along「うまくやっていく」
・get off「降りる」
・break down「故障する」
・give in「屈する」
・turn up「姿を現す」など
他動詞になるもの
例文：
I can’t make out what you say.
（私はあなたのおっしゃることが理解できません。）
Turn on the room light, please.
（部屋の電気をつけてください。）
その他、よく使われる表現です。
・turn off〜「〜を消す」
・bring up〜「〜を育てる」
・carry out〜「〜を実行する」
・figure out〜「〜を理解する」
・call off〜「〜を中止する」
・put out〜「〜を消す」
・set off〜＝start「〜を始める」
・give up〜「〜をあきらめる」
・take off〜「〜を脱ぐ」
・turn down〜「〜を断る」
・take over〜「〜を引き継ぐ」など
ここで、ひとつ注意すべき点があります。
目的語が人称代名詞の場合は、動詞と副詞の間に置くということです。
例文：
I brought her up.
（私は彼女を育てた。）
目的語が人称代名詞でなければ、動詞の後でも、副詞の後でも、どちらに置いても構いません。
例文：
I brought up my aunt’s child.
I brought my aunt’s child up.
（私はおばの子供を育てた。）
3 動詞+副詞+前置詞
他動詞の働きをします。
例文：
We did away with the old rules.
（古い規則を廃止した。）
I have looked up to the teacher since I was a junior high school student.
（中学生の頃から、その先生を尊敬しています。）
I am looking forward to seeing you this autumn.
（今秋、あなたにお会いするのを楽しみにしています。）
その他、よく使われる表現です。
・keep up with〜「〜に遅れないようについていく」
・catch up with〜「〜に追いつく」
・look down on (upon)〜(＝despise)「〜を軽蔑する」
・look up to〜(＝respect)「〜を尊敬する」
・make up for〜「〜の埋め合わせをする」
・put up with〜「〜をがまんする」
・run short of〜「〜が不足する」
・speak ill of〜「〜の悪口を言う」など
4 動詞+名詞+前置詞
他動詞の働きをします。
例文：
We take part in the chorus contest.
（私達は合唱コンクールに参加しています。）
Pay attention to the ceiling.
（天井にご注意ください。）
I caught sight of Tom in a crowd.
（人ごみの中で、トムを見つけた。）
その他、よく使われる表現です。
・find fault with〜「〜について文句を言う、あら探しをする」
・make fun of〜「〜をからかう」
・make use of〜「〜を利用する」
・take care of〜「〜の世話をする」
・give way to〜「〜に譲る、屈する」
・get rid of〜「〜を除去する」
・take advantage of〜「〜を利用する」
・take pride in〜「〜に誇りを持つ」など
新しく動詞を知ったら、句動詞ごと覚えておくと、後々大変便利です。これらは入試によく出題されています。
